IN THIS LESSON

In this lesson, you’ll learn about the different types of warranties available for solar systems and why they are essential for protecting your investment. We’ll cover product, performance, battery, and detailing what each one covers and how long they typically last.

What Are Solar Warranties?

Solar warranties are guarantees provided by manufacturers and installers to ensure that your solar system performs as expected. These warranties protect your investment by covering potential issues like equipment defects, performance degradation, and installation errors. Understanding the warranties available can give you peace of mind and confidence in your solar energy system.

Types of Solar Warranties

Product Warranty

  • Definition: A product warranty covers defects in materials or manufacturing of the solar panels.

  • Duration: Typically lasts 10-25 years.

  • What It Covers: This warranty ensures that your panels are free from defects that could affect their functionality, like faulty wiring or damaged frames. If a panel malfunctions or fails this warranty covers replacement of that component.

Performance Warranty

  • Definition: A performance warranty guarantees that your solar panels will produce a certain amount of energy every year.

  • Duration: Usually 25 years.

  • What It Covers: Solar panels naturally degrade over time, but this warranty ensures they maintain a minimum performance level (usually 80-85% efficiency after 25 years). If production falls below the expected level for a given year this warranty requires your solar provider to reimburse you for the difference.

Batteries Warranty

  • Definition: Batteries are responsible for converting electricity from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC), which powers your home.

  • Duration: Typically lasts 5-15 years, depending on the type of battery.

  • What It Covers: This warranty includes repairs or replacements if the battery fails due to manufacturing defects or other covered issues. Some installers offer extended warranties for batteries.
